The venerable old cities of Sanliurfa are located in the South Eastern Anatolian region around 180 kilometres west of Kiziltepe. Abraham was born there, according to both the Bible and the Quran, before moving to Canaan, present-day Palestine. The intervention of one vengeful and wicked King Nimrod, who had Abraham flung from a catapult from the city’s castle to fall into a pile of burning wood, distinguishes the local Muslim narrative from that of the other great monotheistic faiths. Thankfully, God intervened and changed the faggots into fish and the fire into water. The Pool of Sacred Fish and the mosque complex that surrounds Abraham’s Cave are open to visitors today.

The Organization of Islamic Cooperation held its 11th Anniversary Ceremony in Baku, the nation’s capital, in June. Anlurfa, which was chosen by the Tourism Ministers’ Conference as the Islamic countries’ 2023 tourism capital, has finished its preparations. Zeynel Abidin Beyazgül, the mayor of the Sanliurfa Metropolitan Municipality, who provided information about the studies, predicted that in 2023, tourism will reach its pinnacle. Metropolitan Mayor Zeynel Abidin Beyazgül said:
“Şanlıurfa is a city accepted all over the world with its historical, touristic and cultural values. Nevali Çori, Sefertepe, Göbeklitepe, Karahantepe and many of our historical and cultural values that cannot be counted here have made Sanliurfa the center of attention of the world. All these discoveries were instrumental in rewriting the known history of the world. Now, we, who have such a deep-rooted wealth, have of course been working intensively with our teams on how we can better promote these values in Turkey and in the world.”
Beyazgül claimed that their efforts had paid off because Sanliurfa, the most populous city in Turkey, had been chosen as the Islamic world’s tourism hub for the year 2023. The influx of domestic and international tourists to our city and the occupancy rates in the hotels are already reaping the benefits of this. We are making various preparations in this regard for both domestic and international visitors to witness and experience the many natural wonders of Sanliurfa just waiting to be discovered. We support the archaeological research being done in our city logistically, to put it succinctly.
