The main core of Sumela Monastery is approximately 1600 years old, with extension continuing for over a thousand years. It is carved dramatically into the side of a high cliff, 300 metres above the valley below. Until the Turkish Republic was established in 1923, the monastery was still in operation as a Greek academic institution.
